Hydrogen Hub Gateway
Our home for all Hydrogen news throughout the Americas
Building a more sustainable future
A robust national hydrogen market is critical to advancing the transition to a clean energy economy with hydrogen at its core. The development and deployment of regional hydrogen ecosystems is the main priority of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Hub program. Recognizing hydrogen’s role in meeting the United States’ net-zero climate goals, the Hydrogen Hubs program will utilize $7 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support hydrogen basins throughout the country.
Air Liquide, with over 60 years of expertise along the entire hydrogen value chain, is actively participating in the Hydrogen Hubs process. Air Liquide will participate in six of the seven hydrogen hubs approved for funding by the U.S. Department of Energy. As a partner, Air Liquide will lend its hydrogen know-how in production, liquefaction, distribution, storage and end-use technologies to meet the specific needs of four Hubs selected for funding by the U.S Department of Energy: HyVelocity Hub on the Gulf Coast, PNWH2 Hub in the Pacific Northwest, ARCH2 Hub in Appalachia, and MARCHH2 Hub in the Midwest. Air Liquide is a supporter of the Mid-Atlantic and California hubs.
The establishment of a nation-wide hydrogen network will accelerate the use of hydrogen for the U.S. energy transition, advancing critical steps towards delivering the benefits of hydrogen for our environment, economy, workforce and energy security.
What is the Hydrogen Hubs program all about?
$7 billion
Biden-Harris Administration Announces $7 Billion For America’s First Clean Hydrogen Hubs, Driving Clean Manufacturing and Delivering New Economic Opportunities Nationwide.
3 million metric tons of H2
The H2Hubs are expected to collectively produce three million metric tons of hydrogen annually, reaching nearly a third of the 2030 U.S. production target and lowering emissions from hard-to-decarbonize industrial sectors that represent 30 percent of total U.S.
RDD&D
The program provides funding for research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) projects that advance the production, storage, distribution, and use of hydrogen across various sectors, such as transportation, industry, and power generation.
Key Driver
The program will be a central driver in helping communities across the country benefit from clean energy investments, good-paying jobs and improved energy security.
“A robust U.S. hydrogen market is key to advancing the transition to a low-carbon economy. Aligned with its ADVANCE strategy, Air Liquide is proud to be a partner in six of the selected Hydrogen Hubs and to deliver on the promise of low-carbon solutions. With programs like the Hydrogen Hubs, the U.S. is well positioned to foster hydrogen innovation. Today, as many sectors of the Industry are tackling decarbonation, and are strategically poised to employ the environmental and economic benefits of hydrogen, we are looking forward to working with our partners to develop these Hubs and support the establishment of a mature domestic hydrogen market.”

Hydrogen Safety 101
- Hydrogen is a non-tox, non-corrosive and non-polluting gas. But, like any gas or energy source, respecting safety measures when handling it is critical to its safe use.
- Hydrogen, when handled improperly, can be flammable and/or explosive - just like natural gas or gasoline.
- Even so, hydrogen is much lighter than air which means it dissipates rapidly when released.
- In industry, hydrogen has been used routinely for decades in a wide range of applications and has a lower accident rate than the industrial accident rate**.
- In mobility, the safety of the hydrogen fuel tank is guaranteed by ventilation and, in the event of a fire, through the controlled release of hydrogen resulting in a flame without causing any explosion.
- In fact, most stringent tests have shown that a hydrogen car is no more dangerous than a traditional gasoline-powered car.
Air Liquide: A Global Hydrogen Safety Expert
Air Liquide is a leader in US regulations, codes and standards development, sponsoring experts as voting members and alternate members for a variety of US national standards development committees. Air Liquide has an international network of hydrogen energy safety experts monitoring and coordinating positions on regulations, codes and standards to support the development of the US H2 ecosystem development. Air Liquide’s commitment to hydrogen safety extends beyond the US with activity in all hydrogen safety standards with a global or international impact, including: UN GTR 13, ISO, NFPA, CGA, ASME, and EIGA.
- Compressed Gas Association: Air Liquide has taken a leadership role in the development of hydrogen safety standards for the emerging market actively participating in the Compressed Gas Association , which has developed standards for hydrogen equipment with key executive involvement on the Executive Committee, Standards council, Hyco Committee, Hydrogen Technology and Hydrogen Strategy workgroups.
- The operating teams in Air Liquide are active in the Center for Hydrogen Safety working group to advance the discussion on safety related to increasing the concentration of hydrogen in existing natural gas network piping (called “H2 blending”).
