Air Liquide Large Industries North America donates $10,000 to Shriners Children’s

On Tuesday, May 23, Andrew Garnett, president, Large Industries North America, presented a $10,000 donation to Shriners Children’s on behalf of the business unit. After the check presentation, Andrew and the team were given a tour of Shriner Children’s Texas hospital where they saw first hand the amazing work conducted at the hospital.
In last year’s Voice of the Customer Survey, Air Liquide committed to donate $100 for every response received. The LI-NAM sales teams received nearly 100 responses and were pleased to support the Shriners Children's organization , which provides pediatric care and support at locations across North America..
Launched annually, the survey gathers feedback, and leadership develops action plans to deliver on what is most important to our customers. This is the second year Shriners Children’s has been chosen as the charity for the customer survey. In total, LI-NAM has donated $22,000 on behalf of Air Liquide and our customers to Shriners Children’s. The money dated this year will go to the Tissue Bank located onsite at the hospital.

Did you know? Shriners Children’s Texas Location
Shriners started the first burn hospital in Galveston in 1966. Then, in January of 2021, they combined Houston and Galveston Shriners hospital to become Shriners Children’s Texas; where they now treat acute burns, orthopedics, and cleft lip and palate. Burn patients spend one day per percentage of burn on the unit before being released from critical care. Currently, they are expanding to provide 40 unit patient and student housing.
- 15 bed pediatric ICU and 15 inpatient rooms
- Child Life department and playroom: This is where patients can come to have fun and just be kids. In addition to providing play bedside with patients to distract from shots and or procedures, the team schedules a number of activities and games outpatients can enjoy while they are receiving patient care. The playroom features a pool table, video games, and a music therapy room, and a therapy dog named Declan!
- Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetic Services. A team of specialists who actually build and fit orthotic and prosthetic devices for orthopedic patients. There is a full workshop and machine shop in the back where they can fabricate anything from scoliosis braces and leg braces to prosthetic arms and legs. They work in conjunction with the Motion Analysis Center and the Rehab, which are both also located at the hospital.
- Motion Analysis Center is a high tech lab used to measure and analyze the mobility of the patients. 3D imagery data is captured with special cameras all around the room and force plates on the floor. It can help in the treatment of patients with conditions like Cerebral Palsy and other movement disorders – and it can also help in the treatment of athletic injuries.
- Rehab is the newly remodeled space for the rehabilitation department. It offers physical, recreational and occupational therapy. These therapies can help improve mobility to be able to walk, get dressed, play, or increase strength – or even learning how to walk with a prosthesis or an orthotic brace.
- Tissue Bank is a very unique and important part of the burn treatment at the hospital. It exists as only one of a few onsite, hospital tissue banks in the country. It allows the hospital to process and store donated tissue onsite for use as skin grafts on acute third and fourth degree burn patients. In the event of a large-scale emergency, having such tissue onsite better equips the hospital to respond immediately. After processing, we freeze these grafts and use them as a temporary biomedical bandage that helps prevent infection and speed up the healing process. Later, patients will receive their own permanent skin grafts, called auto-grafts. On average, the hospital uses 750 square feet of tissue per year, which is the equivalent of about 250 donors. We also process and use donated amnion, which is a tissue that comes from placenta. Amnion, donated after a c-section, is extremely effective in treating second-degree burns, as well as burns to the eyes and the face because of its growth properties.
- Psychology department is part of our philosophy of wrap-around care. It is important because it provides support for patients and their families who are dealing with a diagnosis or traumatic injury. The psychologists provide counseling services for inpatient and outpatient patients and their families. This department also helps patients transition back to their home life in collaboration with our Child Life Specialists through our School Re-entry Program. Often times, this consists of a video to teachers, school leaders and students about the patient’s condition, injury and or recovery, which reduces their chance of bullying.
